How cultural projects can help to create an alternative life-world

Any kind of civic engagement – be it in democratic or non-democratic countries – primarily deals with questions and problems of political culture. Politics, and the role authorities play in it, dominates the picture in authoritarian systems, of course; nevertheless activists should never forget that it is (usually) society which develops a certain type of government. The Irish referendum has thrown European Integration into yet another crisis. Is it a new one? I do not think so. The long lasting process of giving the European Union a constitutional basis has been flawed by a misconceptualized and obsolete idea of implemenation. Yet the current situation opens up a chance for citizens to appropriate our European reality by democratic means. Please do not let it slip away easily: see the resolution by Citizens of Europe.

Kunst und Politik? „Ein weites Feld!“, ist der in der deutschen Literatur bewanderte Kommentator schnell geneigt festzustellen. Die beiden gehören nicht zueinander, stoßen dennoch immer wieder zusammen, benutzen oder behindern sich mitunter sogar. Also bleibt jeder lieber schön für sich, so wie es schon die Altvordern forderten, ganz besonders in Deutschland. Und doch bedienen sie sich zweier grundlegender menschlicher Eigenschaften: Kunstfertigkeit und Kreativität. Auf die gleiche Weise, wie jahrtausendelang über die Kunst des Liebens oder der Kriegsführung nachgedacht und geschrieben wurde, ist das Lebenswerk großer Politiker, gerade in seiner Widersprüchlichkeit, ohne eine gehörige Portion Mut zur Kreativität und Unkonventionalität nicht zu erklären. Wenn diese Annahme einer inneren Verbundenheit nicht gänzlich abwegig ist, kann die Spurensuche in den gesellschaftlichen Räumen ihres Zusammentreffens Interessantes zutage fördern.
