Valeryja Kustava, 24, is known as the wild child of the Belarusian literary scene. She published her first collection of poetry when she was only seven. In February I was happy to invite her to give a reading performance during the CULTural Days of the exhibition project “Focus on Belarus - Terra Incognita”. Stunned by her compelling show entitled “Love me in Belarusian” I decided to interview her about the Belarusian approach to the universal language of love. Die Beziehung zwischen Kunst, Politik und Markt ist seit jeher sehr ambivalent. Während der   letzten Jahrzehnte hat der Markt sicherlich den größten Einfluss erlangt. Im Nachgang der Veranstaltung OpenForum Prague hatte ich die Gelegenheit, den Dresdner Künstler Ulf Göpfert zu diesem Themenkomplex zu interviewen. Er sprach mit mir über die Role des Künstlers als Prophet sozialen Wandels und seine persönlichen Erfahrungen zwischen bürgerschaftlicher Verantwortung und dem Streben nach künstlerischer und persönlicher Vervollkommnung. Entering the thirtiest year of my existence on earth I am happy to realize that these last two years have been the most interesting ones of my life so far. I travelled into more countries than I can count with the fingers on my hands; I had to learn how to take care of more than two activities at a time; I finally realized that “no action means no result”; and again and again I was blessed with the acquaintance of extraordinary people who challenge and inspire me.

Two of these persons, Noa Treister (Belgrade) and Pavel Turchaninov (Minsk), I met during my project OpenFora. These encounters alone prove to me that all the work, sorrows and dedication invested in the idea of a place where Europeans meet was worth it. Two things I have learned in particular: I can achieve much more when I take myself out of the front row and rely on the “wisedom of the group” (that’s for you, Frank). The other one is: I need to push on. If Noa and Pavel are able to give their very best to improve their fellows’ lives at the margins of Europe, there is no reason why I should not be able to do it at its very heart. Noa and Pavel, thank you so much for giving back meaning to my life.

Transformatorische Politik hinter der Mauer

„Nichts gibt es mehr, um es in die Waagschale zu werfen. Keine Münze kann etwas entscheiden. Ortlos in sich selber. Im Niemandsland ohne Grenzstreifen. Nur diese Bewegung hinein in ihre grünblauen Augen wird für ihn zurückbleiben. Das Eintauchen. Dieser flüchtige Moment einer Berührung mit sich selbst. Die Nachhaltigkeit gespürt zu haben“ (Schleime 2008: 90).

DDR-Bürgerrechtlern scheint die Angst vor einem zweiten Verlust umzutreiben: die Angst vor der nachwirkenden Zersetzung ihrer Persönlichkeit durch das Verschwimmen der Erinnerung an die DDR. Dies hat auch mit einem schwerwiegenden Versäumnis der letzten 20 Jahre zu tun. Unter Rückendeckung des medialen und wissenschaftlichen Trommelfeuers ist der Bevölkerung nicht glaubhaft gemacht worden, dass in der Erinnerung jeder nur für sich selber sprechen kann; dass die Bürgerrechtler ihr Leid ausdrücken und als Menschen sprechen wollen, nicht etwa als Repräsentanten eines Volkes. Wann werden wir endlich lernen, einander mit offenen Herzen zuzuhören?

How cultural projects can help to create an alternative life-world

Any kind of civic engagement – be it in democratic or non-democratic countries – primarily deals with questions and problems of political culture. Politics, and the role authorities play in it, dominates the picture in authoritarian systems, of course; nevertheless activists should never forget that it is (usually) society which develops a certain type of government.
